Managing Memory and MS

"About 50% of people with MS will develop some degree of cognitive dysfunction. But only 5%-10% of persons with MS develop problems that are severe enough to interfere in a significant way with everyday activities."

Although it's common to experience some level of memory or other cognitive impairment with MS, there are simple things you can do every day to help keep your memory sharp and stay organized, including:

  • Doing crossword puzzles and playing card games
  • Reading books, magazines and newspapers
  • Writing things down and making "to-do" lists
  • Using personal digital assistants (PDAs) to organize important information

Try playing some of the memory building games on MS ActiveSource to help you keep your mind sharp and track your progress.

Some people have also benefited from meditation and yoga. The important thing is to keep yourself and your mind engaged as fully as possible.

Staying Connected and Organized

Family, friends and the MS community provide invaluable support when it comes to coping with MS symptoms. For example, ActiveVoices peer mentors are available to listen to your experiences and share their own experiences about trying to manage some of the physical and cognitive symptoms of MS.

Remember, maintaining a positive outlook can be one of the most effective MS strategies of all.

Exploring Treatment Options

Talk to your doctor about supporting therapies that may help control or alleviate the cognitive symptoms of MS. Work with your healthcare team to find the strategy that fits your lifestyle and your goals.

Sometimes problems with memory can be intensified by depression, fatigue and a short attention span. Your doctor can help you determine if these are factors for you — and develop an appropriate plan.
