AVONEX®

(interferon beta-1a)

  • AVONEX is approved by the FDA to treat relapsing forms of MS to decrease the number of relapses and slow the occurrence of some of the physical disability that is common in people with MS. AVONEX is approved for use in people who have experienced a first attack and have lesions consistent with MS on their MRI.

  • AVONEX is the only MS therapy proven effective after the first attack, to reduce flare-ups and slow physical disability*
  • Reduce the number of flare-ups
    • In a 3-year study of people who had only one flare-up, AVONEX reduced the risk of a second flare-up by almost half (44%)
    • In people who had multiple (9 or more) brain lesions, AVONEX reduced their risk of having a second flare-up by 66%, at 3 years
    • At 10 years the risk of a second flare-up was reduced by 40% in people who began AVONEX therapy immediately compared with those who delayed therapy
  • Slow down physical disability
    • AVONEX slowed down physical disability by 37% in a 2-year study
    • In a separate study, 90% of people taking AVONEX stayed below an EDSS of 3.0 at 5 years, which means they were still active and able after 5 years
    • 80% of people taking AVONEX stayed below an EDSS of 3.0 at 10 years, which means they were still active and able at 10 years
  • Reduce brain lesions and the rate of brain shrinkage
    • AVONEX slows down the formation of harmful brain lesions and reduces the size of lesions by 91%
    • In the second year of a clinical trial, people taking AVONEX had 55% less brain shrinkage than those not on therapy
