Working with Your Doctor
If you do have multiple sclerosis, several medical professionals may be involved in your care. But the doctor you will see most frequently will probably be a neurologist, a doctor who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system, like MS. Your neurologist can be one of your most important resources in managing your multiple sclerosis. You should work closely with him or her to find the strategies and MS treatment options that are right for you.
Making the Most of Your Doctor’s Visit
Your first visit to the neurologist may be a long one. The doctor will ask you questions, and you will have plenty of questions for the doctor. Be patient, as this is for your benefit. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, lifelong condition and you don't want to leave any stone unturned when it comes to taking care of your MS. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to manage it. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your appointment:
- Bring a list of your questions to your initial visit. You can also download a list of questions commonly asked by people with MS. You may have questions about the difference between injection therapy and infusion therapy...or even about the new treatments that are available.
- Review them carefully with the doctor.
- Make sure you understand the doctor's responses. Ask the doctor to repeat the response if you don't understand it. Take your time and be thorough—you deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
- Take as many notes as you feel you need. Then, review these notes with your doctor.
Don’t be shy about asking for information. It’s important that you have the answers and information you need to help manage your multiple sclerosis.
