Workout Tips
The MS Active Wellness fitness program is designed to be accessible to almost anyone with multiple sclerosis. The key is to listen to your body and to pace yourself according to how you feel each day. You can adapt your workout to fit your needs and help manage the symptoms that most affect you. Start where you feel comfortable and progress at your own pace. And remember, you can pause the DVD at any time to have a drink of water, check your heart rate, or to rest when needed.
Below are tips from fitness expert, Katrina Hodgson, and leading multiple sclerosis specialist Dr. Barry Hendin. They'll help ensure that you are getting the most from your workout without compromising safety.
Set goals
Setting personal goals can help people with multiple sclerosis see more tangible benefits of exercise.
Prepare
Make sure you identify a cool, well-ventilated area to exercise, wear loose clothing and have plenty of water on hand.
Stick to it
You can manage this program — just exercise at your own pace, don't overdo it, and modify the routines as needed.
Get a partner
Exercising with a friend can provide an additional source of motivation and help you stick to a routine.
Talk to your doctor
Be sure to consult with your physician before starting any exercise program.
Listen to your body
During the workout, pay attention to your body and the signals it is giving you.
Cool down
Be sure to complete the cool-down portion of the workout and log your progress.
